Who You Callin’ a Hoe?

Texas

We’re screwed.

We have a mole in our ranks. Part of the Philosopher’s Stone has gone missing, and we have no Maximus to save the day. Not to mention the former Maximus is aging faster than a California raisin.

After I finish packing, I head to the underground garage. A series of black government-issued sedans and SUVs litter the three-level parking deck. Nathan, the vampire butler-slash-cousin, takes the bag I’m more than capable of carrying.

“Hello again, Ms. Texas.”

“Just Texas. Drop the ‘miss,’ mister.”

He gives me a bright smile, then turns away as he gently places my bag into the trunk of a limousine, handling it as if it were mint-condition Givenchy luggage instead of a ripped and tattered duffel bag.

When he opens the door, I find Paris perched on the edge of her seat. The commander does not turn to face me when I sit beside her. She doesn’t say a word.

The limo pulls off, exiting the garage and entering the twisting country back roads of Georgia that shroud our headquarters.

The partition is raised, and I’m not used to being with the commander all by my lonesome. I want mission details, but Paris is just staring straight ahead—not blinking, barely breathing, deep in thought.

After all, a top-ranking member of her trusted Alchemist Order ignored her command to erase his protégé’s memory. The deceit has to burn.

When I maneuver to face her, she turns toward the window again.

“Where are we going?”

“Buckhead,” Paris answers, her attention focused on absolutely nothing but dirt and trees and cows.

I roll my eyes toward the roof.

“Who’s in Buckhead? The person with the stone?”

“No.”

“The stone?”

“No.”

“A psychic to find the mole and the stone?

“No…” She taps her long fingers against her thighs and tilts her head. She seems to think through what to tell me.

“Commander Paris.” I lean past the console between our seats, getting all up in her space. “I’d really like to understand what’s happening.”

“We are meeting with our allies, the Prussakovs. I’ll need you to work with them.”

“Oh, hell no.” I cross my arms. “I’m not working with any more vampires.”

“More? You mean Prince Khamari?”

“I haven’t worked with him. I was told that I had to, since I killed his stupid clansman—who attacked me first, by the way.”

“Oh…yes. The blood exchange. Seems so long ago,” she says, her voice sounding centuries old. “The Prussakovs have worked with us for many years. I’d like you to work with them. Closely.”

“Why can’t someone else? I’m new, still getting a hold of my powers. You’ve got other Maestros—”

“With Rich out of commission, you seem to have the rawest power. Charlotte will be busy aligning with our global counterparts and taking care of our students. And Cali is… She needs to attend to a personal matter. She cannot handle the magnitude of this issue.” Paris grips her knees.

I nod, knowing the personal matter is the bottle of gin at the bottom of her desk drawer.

“I chose you for a reason. I hope you won’t disappoint the Society.
